Revision Tips and Techniques for Success - Understanding how we Learn

Students will cover how we learn and process information to explore effective, research-based, revision strategies which enable students to maximise their time and make revision more impactful. The session will look at cognitive load and memory before then introducing students to effective revision strategies such as dual coding, concrete examples, retrieval practice and spaced practice. The aim is to ensure students are more knowledgeable of how their brains work and so understand why certain strategies for learning are more powerful than others.

Meet your Teacher - Head of Teaching and Learning -

Dr Jack Sheldrake, EdD Chester, MSc (Eng) Liverpool, BSc (Hons) Hull, PGCSE

Jack Sheldrake

Jack is our Head of Teaching and Learning at Queen’s. He thoroughly enjoys working as a physics teacher and he is fascinated by all aspects of how pupils understand and process their learning. This interest in how young people learn led Jack to successfully study for a doctorate in education.

As Head of Teaching and Learning, he supports pupils with several learning processes, such as effective revision strategies, which utilise time as effectively as possible and unpicking how pupils learn and removing cognitive barriers.

He lives in Hoylake, Wirral with his wife and three children. When he is not doing helping his children with their learning then he will be in the garden or building something.
