Year 12 students preparing for UCAS applications gained an insight into the study and interview skills they will need for university from a former Queen’s girl herself.
Rebecca Barritt – now Education Liaison Officer at Edge Hill University – offered a whole range of tips and advice on how university study differs from the school experience of learning.
“Time management and how to prioritise work is a crucial thing to learn in the university environment – deadlines can be much longer which sounds easier but actually poses huge problems in how you organise yourself,” said Queen’s alumna Rebecca, who studied Biochemistry for her own degree.
“I am the sort of person who has to do everything really thoroughly and in detail so when I arrived at university I set out to write up notes from every lecture I attended.
“I soon realised that this wasn’t practical and that I needed this time for other really important tasks and assignments and I felt a lot better once I had made this decision,’
Rebecca also explained what interviewers are expecting from candidates at university and other interviews, covering interview preparation, body language and the Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI) faced often by medical, veterinary and dentistry candidates.
Edge Hill University opened their own medical school last year and the university is fast becoming a major destination for potential medics world and country-wide.
The session was run as part of our the Sixth Form QUEST enrichment programme which runs on a Wednesday afternoon and is this term handed over to UCAS preparation.
