The Queen’s Lower School are delighted to be able to join the #MakatonChester campaign and have set up an after school club for pupils who would like to learn more about how to communicate using Makaton. The children hope to share what they learn and play their part in making Chester inclusive for all residents and visitors.
Makaton is an effective language programme that uses signs and symbols alongside the spoken word and gives everyone a helping hand to communicate. Makaton supports children and adults with communication needs including learning disabilities, sensory impairments and short or long-term difficulties with speech.
#MakatonChester launched a campaign in 2019 to work towards making Chester the UK’s first Makaton Friendly City and encouraged shops, cafes, councils and other public facing organisations to train their staff in Makaton to help people with disabilities to communicate.
