Last weekend, 14 students and two members of staff set off for ShrewsMUN, the annual MUN conference at Shrewsbury School.
This residential trip is always a particular highlight of the year for us on account of the beautiful setting and the friendly atmosphere, and again this year’s conference was greatly enjoyed by all.
The Shrewsbury organising committee was headed by a Shrewsbury student who had begun her MUN journey at Queen’s several years ago, so there was a distinct feeling of things coming full circle!
Our delegation included both first-timers and experienced MUNers from Years 9-13, representing Canada and the UK. The icing on the cake was that Year 13 student Hannah had been invited to act as a guest-chair - a worthy culmination of her long-standing involvement with MUN. It was great to see her lead her committee, in concert with her co-chair, with calm, friendly authority and competence. The tone and focus set by the chairs are so crucial in establishing a purposeful atmosphere in committee, and Hannah rose to the challenge admirably.
In committees, all of our delegates got involved constructively, setting out their reasoning for the clauses they had prepared and taking questions from the floor, conducting diplomatic negotiations with other countries and making alliances.
Kitty in Year 9 was awarded the Highly Commended Award in the Special Commission for Equality and Diversity, and all of our delegates deserve a huge “well done!” for helping to make everyone’s experience of the conference such a rewarding one!
