Mrs Valerie Hands (Miss Brown) sadly passed away in Leominster on 18th January 2020.
She will be remembered as an extraordinary history teacher, quietly spoken but extremely knowledgeable. She expected high standards from Queen’s girls and reputedly never awarded an ‘A’ for work: A(-) was the highest mark attainable from her! Apart from conveying a true love for her subject, she also taught how to take quick notes as she spoke - an essential skill in those pre-digital days, but one that was not often explicitly taught.
Many alumni will also remember the excitement of Miss Brown’s marriage to Mr Ray Hands (physics) one Friday lunchtime! The fact that they both returned from the Register Office to deliver their afternoon lessons was indicative of their dedication to Queen’s girls’ education.
