We are absolutely thrilled to announce that the National Gallery will feature artwork from our Year 6 girls in the annual Take One Picture exhibition this summer.
This exhibition showcases creative pieces from pupils across the country, all inspired by this year’s chosen painting, Henri Rousseau’s ‘Surprised!’. For nearly 30 years, the Gallery has encouraged primary school children to explore and respond creatively to one painting from its collection, sparking their imagination and artistic expression. This year’s programme is the largest yet, with participation from 300 schools.
Back in September, Mrs Stables, our fabulous Lower School art teacher, submitted a variety of artworks created by our pupils and was delighted to be informed recently that the Year 6 felted wall hanging was selected for the exhibition. She said: “I was delighted with the response of the whole school to the Take One Picture initiative. The girls demonstrated their artistic skills with characteristic flair and confidence. Many visitors will have seen a display of the artwork on the hall wall over this academic year and I hope that many of our pupils, particularly last year's Year 6, who made the felted wall hanging, will take the opportunity to visit the free exhibition at the National Gallery during August. It is a huge achievement to be selected from 300 schools which took part and I am very proud of them.”
The Take One Picture programme aims to integrate art into children's learning across the curriculum, inspiring creativity, curiosity, and a lifelong connection with artists’ work. By exhibiting a selection of the projects, the programme celebrates children’s achievements, builds pride and confidence, and fosters a sense of ownership and belonging in the Gallery.
This year’s exhibition space in London extends beyond the Gallery walls into Trafalgar Square, running alongside Summer on the Square. This Free Festival of Art, running from 1 August – 1 September 2024 on the North Terrace, Trafalgar Square, is a celebration of art made by children for children. Since 2020, Summer on the Square has introduced families and children to the Gallery’s art through a variety of artistic and creative workshops.
We look forward to seeing our girls’ talents on display and encourage anyone that may be in London during this time to experience this wonderful celebration of young artists.
